Taking a break at Studio Waterloo in the Huon Valley, Tasmania.

Taking a break at Studio Waterloo in the Huon Valley, Tasmania.

Born in England with dual citizenship for Australia, Manning’s first solo exhibition in 1985 followed four years of study at Goldsmiths College London [Art Foundation] and Exeter University [English & Art]. Moving to Sydney, Australia in 1989 for a post graduate in Art at City Art Institute Manning then opened and ran a gallery for contemporary art, Cameron Street Studio, in Balmain for three years. Moving again to Melbourne in 1994 and then to Tasmania in 2009 she continued exhibiting regularly [independently and with commercial galleries] and entering work in art prizes. Residencies have also formed a part of her art practice, drawn to historical sites two of these have been through the prestigious Hill End Residency Program in NSW. Awarded an Australia Council New Work Established Grant in 2005 Manning struggled at this time to deal with the death of her father. Now living in country Tasmania with a large historic apple packing shed as her studio, she is a founding member of the Tasmanian Artists and Makers of the Huon, and volunteer member of the Huon Valley Council Arts and Culture Committee. Through the latter Manning proposed the creation of an alternative mobile professional exhibition space, ARTBOX. This bespoke converted shipping container was built in 2020 when she was invited by council as Guest Curator to devise and run two exhibitions. The position was supported by a RANT and Tasmanian Government Regional Arts Grant.

Artist Statement

As a Contemporary Realist I explore my experience of the world around me through my art practise. Predominately working from life in acrylics, while painterly up close, step back from my work and the marks merge and the subject becomes distinct. Though I love photography and admire the skill of the super realists, for me the joy of painting is that it is paint and I want that process to be visible. I develop distinct series of work, most of which revolve round some aspect of time: The time specific nature of work where I am locked into a certain light or season in the landscape or the subject. Time restricted work controlled by the limitations of a sitter’s stamina. Time as subject, our relationship with the past and the passage of time. Historical time and its influence on our lives today. As a documenter of present times, social or environmental phenomenon and transient events.  I examine my own life and our attitudes to death.

Henrietta Manning Cynthia II acrylic 127 x 79 cm.jpg

Cynthia II. acrylic 127 x 79 cm

An example of the latter is the work Cynthia II that is both a still life, a portrait and an expression and investigation of loss. A loved one’s clothes are so emotive to the ones left behind and difficult to part with. My mother died when I was 15 years old and moving around the world her clothes came with me. Some I wore, none I could part with because of the memories attached. Hanging three dresses from different periods in her life on my studio wall I sought both to bring her closer in my mind and to paint her portrait. I want to engage my audience, to draw them in, but hope to raise questions and challenge pre conceived ideas, so while my work is accessible through its realism it invites the viewer to see things differently and challenges the viewer to look again, to ask questions. All I can ever remember wanting to be was an artist. It is a wonderful thing to know what you are going to do, despite the hard road and self-doubt. I think most artist’s would agree that the desire to create is just a part of you, informing the world around you, as the world informs your art.
