The artist painting in Oatlands Gaol Feb 2017

From September 2015, through the Oatlands Gaol Artist in Residence Program, Southern Midlands Council, Manning spent weeks at a time living in the historic Gaolers Residence with access to paint in the historic buildings under the care of SMC. 51 paintings, was exhibited in 2017.
Oatlands is a town seeped in colonial history and the settlement of Van Diemen's land, with a large number of Colonial and Georgian buildings.
Initially working in isolation in empty 'preserved' buildings, later through meeting the locals, the artist gained access to private properties. Depictions of empty atmospheric time capsules moved to vibrant studies of current residents living with and transforming historic buildings into the living, breathing homes of today.

The Nightingale.

2018 Australian Western film written, directed, and co-produced by Jennifer Kent.

Oatlands stepped back in time with dirt covered tarnac, actors in period costume and false walls hiding modern views. Watching the filming Manning relished the play between old and new, real and false. To portray a fictional story set in 1825 the crew filmed remnants of the actual past of the town. A strange mix of the real and unreal, where the costumed coachman did fall asleep waiting to be called on set to play his part!
