Exploring Melbourne, Manning sought places to view the landscape from above. She was granted access to the upper floors of empty office blocks and roof tops such as Spencer Street Station, often working late into the night and catching the last train home.

Given access to a tower block being refitted between tenants, the artist painted in vast empty spaces surrounded by dangling cables and empty boxes. In another, building unused for many years, the artist carried her equipment up flights of stairs caked thick with dust and the tiny skeletons of unfortunate birds. Manning found that the isolation and stillness helped concentrate her mind, some of the challenges were avoiding wind on open roofs and light reflections on glass at night. Thirty seven paintings were exhibited in the exhibition' High Vantage Point' at Grand Central Gallery, Melbourne VIC in 1996.
