Eastern Foreshore Series

While undertaking her Post Graduate at City Art Institute, Sydney, the artist lived in Vaucluse and explored the coastline from Rose Bay to Bondi. She discovered a rhythm as to which items would wash up where, according to the tides and weather, and collected examples from specific sites on specific days to work with in the studio.

A work from the series won the Waverly Art Prize 1991, NSW.

Added to the coastal detritus were personal items from the artist or any companion on the day; swim suits, shoes, lipstick. Manning was recording and preserving time capsules of the coastline and her arrival there. Thinking of the early explorers who minutely documented their finds and carefully packaged them to return home for museums and private collections, the artist presents the works as small museum showcases. The watercolours are raised in the center with the found objects set in the surrounding recess.
